Directions to "The World's Longest Yard Sale"

South to North:

The World's Longest Yard Sale begins at the Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden, Alambama on top of Lookout Mountain. Follow Tabor Road across from Noccalula Falls. Stay on this road and it will become Alabama 176. Follow 176 to the Dogtown Community and stay straight through the 4-way stop.

The road then becomes DeKalb County 89. Stay on 89 through communities like Five points, Fort Payne, Fischer,DeSoto State Park, and on into Mentone, Alabama. From Mentone turn right onto Alabama 117 and follow into Georgia where it becomes Georgia #48.

You will stay straight a short distance before turning left on GA 157,then left on 136, right on 189 then right on 157 again. This carries you directly in front of Rock City where you take TN 27 to the US 127 Corridor for the remainder of the yard sale where it ends in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Date: The World's Longest Yard Sale is on August 3-6, 2006

 " The World's Longest Yard Sale has been returned to a 4-day format. The dates will be determined each year by the First Thursday of the month of August. The event will officially take place that Thursday to the following Sunday for 4 days of yard sale heaven!"

Place: The Lookout Mountain Parkway and the U.S. 127 Corridor From: Gadsden, Alabama to Covington, KY

Maybe you haven't heard about what is billed as "The World's Longest Yard Sale." Just imagine 450 miles of highway known as Corridor 173 stretching from Covington, Kentucky to Gadsden, Alabama with vendors proffering their goods all along the way.

If there ever was a mother-of-garage-sales, this must be it! Did someone say 450 miles of yard sales? This is a joke, right? If this is a joke, it's one of the most successful ones of all time drawing yard sale vendors and buyers from all across the country. You don't want to miss The World's Longest Garage Sale! You Want It-They Got It

Do you collect: Hats? Roseville? Weller? old toys? old advertising? delicate china? fishing lures? vintage jewelry?

Do you lust for homemade jam? cake? cookies? bread? sowerkrout on hot dogs? pizza? sausage and peppers? pickles, farm fresh vegetables?

Just about anything you can imagine and then some is for sale on tables that stretch the whole distance. Vendors set up tables outside of the towns along the main through fare and in the villages where spaces are available for a nominal fee.

Sales On The Side Roads

Signs beckon you to travel the side roads where even more sales and special events are taking place. Church dinners await you, bands entertain you, and possibly thousands of tables loaded with that one treasure that has eluded you. Did they say longest yard sale at 450 miles? I bet if you added up all the beckoning side roads to your list you would have a couple hundred more miles of yard sales.

Garage Sale Haggling Heaven

You have 8 days of heavenly haggling: What would you take for that? Could you do a little better? Well, I don't know, I've got 20.00 in it. What sport it is! Oh, you are afraid to haggle? Then there is something you should do. You need to read this!

Where To Start

Jump right into the longest yard sale from either end or somewhere in the middle. Could you do the whole 450 miles in 8 days? If you stopped at every table along the way including a few stops on the side roads, you might complete the whole sale in two months!

So I guess you have to pick and choose your stops in order to cover the whole distance. The vendors sell from sunrise to sunset so you probably could do it all in the 8 days with an eye on the clock and an eye on the map.

What Do They Do With Their Treasures?

What do people do with all their goodies that they haul home? Aside from the cookies and cakes, what becomes of all those treasures? Thanks to the "World's Longest Yard Sale," people discover all kinds of things they can use in thier own home.Then there are the collectors-thousands of them. Don't even ask a collector why they need 9999 left handed widgets. They just do.

Treasure To Sell

The profit motive is alive and well on both sides of the garage sale table. Vendors do well and so do the customers. Many of the treasures purchased end up in antique shops miles away, and possibly even more end up on that great internet auction block called Ebay.
