How To Maximize Your Garage Sale Profits!

The best way to maximize your profits at a garage sale is to plan on having a series of sales all through the garage sale season. After all the collecting, sorting, cleaning and tagging, it’s easy to save all the unsold items for your next sale. You may need to stock up more items, but you will have a good start. Between sales, you can locate more stock by attending estate sales, auctions, and of course, all those garage sales across town. Be on the look out for items that have a greater value than the average person would ever know...then flip them for huge profits.

TIP: You will develop repeat customers by making sure every sale you have features a good variety of items at bargain prices.

How Often to Run A Sale

In most parts of the country, sales work best in the spring, summer and fall. It’s possible to have two sales in each of the seasons, but be careful of overkill. Many people avoid places with never ending garage sales where a "Permanent" sign is covered with a towel during "down time." This isn’t a garage sale; it’s a hillbilly flea market!

Garage sale buyers find excitement in attending your sale on the first day knowing the "good stuff" will be still there. (Make sure that your "good stuff" isn't valuable antiues!) If garage sale hunters see you open for business again the next weekend, many will assume that you are trying to sell all the unsold rejects from the previous sale and they won’t even stop.

TIP: Not only should you space consecutive sales a few weeks apart, you should also add new items to keep repeat customers interested.

What About Regulations?

It’s a good idea to check regulations in your area. Some communities require a garage sale permit and regulate the number of sales you can have as well as the number of days you can run the sale. A phone call to your town clerk should help you answer these questions.

TIP: If your owner’s association or community bans garage sales move your sale to another location! A friend in a neighboring community might allow you to use their driveway.

Designated Storage Area

You are about to host the mother of all garage sales. You will need a place to tag and store all your items until the day of your sale. An empty room, a shed, or part of the garage would do just fine.

For some garage sale hosts, the designated storage area is a temporary loss of space, but for someone planning consecutive sales, the storage area will be needed for the whole garage sale season. You may wish to save some of your special items for selling on Ebay.  You can make a fortune on Ebay with the right knowledge.
