Dickering, Bargaining, Negotiating,
and
Haggling at Your Garage Sale!
Dickering, bargaining, and negotiating for a lower price is an
accepted tradition
in garage sale shopping. People will make you lower offers for
your goods all weekend long and you must be prepared for it.
You need to go about it right or you will lose a
customer.
TIP: You must never make a customer feel embarrassed for
making a lower offer for one of your items. Either accepts
the offer with a smile or make a counter offer with a
smile. If you are firm on your price, buyers will accept
this too as long as you are gracious about it.
A garage sale is like the Turkish Bazaar
, you may have seen in the movies. A friendly bit of repartee
and spirited negotiation is all part of the fun. Did I
say fun? Customers can sense if you are having a good
time, and that means more sales!
A Typical Dickering Conversation:
Buyer: Would you take $12.00 for your
clock?
Seller: I was asking $24.00 but I would
take
$15.00. How is that?
Another option for the seller is a
polite
refusal
Seller: I have about $40.00 in that clock, so $24.00 is the
best I can do.
(When a refusal is done in a friendly way, the customer is not
embarrassed and will most likely look at your other
offerings.) If you try to play hard ball and embarrass
the customer, they will be offended and will quickly
leave.
Another place for selling some of your unusual items is
Ebay. Garage sales and Ebay make a great
