How I Discovered Garage Sales
As newlyweds, my wife and I had a huge empty apartment in dire need of furniture and
furnishings. To solve this problem, she dragged me to garage sales all over the North Country. At first,
I went grudgingly, but had to admit the results were amazing. Our apartment was transformed from an empty shell
into an attractive home with an eclectic collection of quality items, (bought for a portion of their real value)
from garage sales.
The tremendous savings and
the high quality of our purchases started to get my attention. Then I struck gold in the form of an ancient
fishing tackle box filled with old lures that I bought for two dollars! (By the way, one antique lure was
worth $50.00!) Excuse the pun, but I became hooked on garage sales that instant.
The hundreds of garage
sales we attended taught us some valuable lessons that can help you sky rocket your profits! Having a great
sale does not have to be left to luck. By using the tips in this book, I can guarantee that you will have
your best sale ever.
This means extra cash
in your pocket and less clutter in your home. The more items in your sale the better. You can
order some terrific bagains at wholesale. Finding a great wholesale
source is the key.
Treasures In Garage Sales
Garage sales
are hot because that’s where the treasure is!
Bargains abound at garage sales and some of the bargains I have found include the
following:
- mouth blown bottle (I
started to collect these after this discovery)
- a set of depression
glass (I should say tons of depression glass!)
- brass ink well (This
was a real treasure made in France in the 1800’s)
- a painted drop leaf
cherry table (Take the paint off and presto!)
- oak furniture (often
painted, always beautiful)
- old carpenter’s tools
( you name them-levels, brass plumb bobs)
- and all kinds of
"odds and ends" china
Then, there
are the scads of useful every day items such as a blender, toaster, Swiss Army knife, radios, records,
CD’s, and a workout bench.
All those
"wonderful" things you see on TV infomercials today like rowing machines, step machines, bread makers,
and “dicers and slicers” can be found at a garage sale tomorrow at a bargain price too!
This helps
explain the popularity of garage sales. People want to find bargains, and the successful garage sale host
makes this possible. If you want garage sale success, forget about getting store prices for your items, give
people a bargain. You will make people happy and your sales will go through the roof!
You can even
augment your sale by ordering items at wholesale and then re-sell them at
huge profits!
TIP: The key word for a
garage sale host is the word bargain. Provide your customers with bargains and you are on your way to
a great sale.
Real treasures have been found at garage sales too. We
have all heard about the guy who found an original copy of “The Declaration of Independence” hidden in the
back of an inexpensive framed print. He paid two dollars for it and it was worth thousands! People make great
discoveries all the time at garage sales and that helps explain the multitudes of people you see at sales every
Saturday!
Then there
was the person who purchased an original drawing signed by Rodin for a few dollars, which was later,
valued at $12,000! These kinds of discoveries are not everyday occurrences, but it does help to explain
why such a range of humanity will be interested in your sale. (By the way, I’m looking for an original Winslow
Homer painting of a guy fly fishing from a canoe. He painted in upstate New York where I live, so you never
know!)
TIP: Don’t be the
person featured in the news who sold a 5K antique diamond brooch for $.50 because you thought it was costume
jewelry! (I made this up!) Have items appraised if you are in doubt!
